Field Placements at Stanley College

As prescribed by Community Workers Australia (CWA), the Bachelor of Community Services Fieldwork Placements at Stanley College provide students with hands-on experience in frontline community work, designed to help students develop practical skills relevant to the sector.

Fieldwork requirements are delivered in accordance with course accreditation and professional body expectations.

400 hours, to be completed in two placements with two different agencies.

Minimum number of days, two days per week. Maximum number of days, five days per week, depending on the student’s availability and organisational capacity. Fieldwork placement must occur during normal agency working hours.

Students will receive ongoing support and guidance from dedicated Fieldwork Placement Supervisors/Liaison Officers as well as Agency Supervisors. We have a committed Fieldwork Placement Coordinator who oversees all the operational aspects of the fieldwork placements.

Student Profiles at a Glance

Our students come from a range of backgrounds, and each brings something valuable to the table.

  • Many have already completed a Diploma of Community Services and have hands-on experience in the sector.
  • Some are building on their learning through a second field placement, ready to take on more responsibility.
  • Others are just starting, looking for their first opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world setting.

No matter where they are in their journey, all students are committed to learning, contributing, and growing under your guidance.

Why Hosting a Student Is Good for Organisations

Host organisations can have:

  • Access to students developing contemporary knowledge and practical skills in the community services sector.
  • An opportunity to provide existing staff mentorship and coaching opportunities, thereby enhancing their job satisfaction.
  • An opportunity to improve visibility and networks within the community services sector.
  • An opportunity to help train the next generation of community services professionals.

Host Agency Requirements & Responsibilities

Host organisations play an essential part in guiding students through real-world learning. Their supervision ensures that placements meet professional and educational standards.

Students must be supervised by someone with an educational qualification in a welfare or community work-related discipline that is equivalent to or higher than a Bachelor of Community Services. Supervisors must also have at least three years of practical experience, two of which must be acquired after qualification.

A formal Fieldwork Placement Agreement will be prepared before the placement begins. It outlines the student’s tasks, roles, and responsibilities, and must be signed at the start and end of the placement by:

  • The student
  • The Agency Supervisor and/or Task Supervisor (if applicable)
  • Stanley College’s Fieldwork Placement Supervisor or Liaison Officer

Each qualified agency supervisor can supervise up to three students under direct supervision at the same time. An agency supervisor can only supervise more than three students if the supervisor is a designated student supervisor or if students are assigned a qualified task supervisor.

A Task Supervisor must have a minimum of a Certificate IV qualification in a community-work related discipline and at least three years of practical experience in community services settings.

As part of the fieldwork placement supervision, students will receive three supervision visits by a Fieldwork Placement Supervisor during which a short meeting will be held between the Fieldwork Placement Supervisor, the student, and the Agency Supervisor. Agency Supervisors can give direct feedback on students’ progress during this meeting. Agency supervisors will also complete two feedback forms during the fieldwork placement period.

Additionally, in line with CWA guidelines, all host organisations must meet the following criteria:

  • Administrative duties
  • Food delivery

We kindly ask host organisations to follow these guidelines to ensure students gain meaningful, sector-relevant experience.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Yes, if your organisation can provide appropriate supervision.

Contact the College immediately to discuss support or an early termination process.

Yes! Many hosts go on to hire their interns, but it is not a requirement.

Yes. Students are fully covered by a Voluntary Workers Insurance for the duration of the placement. A copy of the Certificate of Currency will be supplied to host agencies.

Contact the College as soon as possible. Internships can be terminated early in cases of misconduct, lack of fit, or unforeseen circumstances, but this should be handled professionally and with proper communication.

While the internship is unpaid by default, hosts may offer non-salary benefits (e.g., travel or meal allowance) as a gesture of goodwill, but this is not required.

The internship is a learning experience, and some guidance and support is expected. However, if serious concerns arise, the College will assist with coaching the intern or, if needed, finding a replacement.

Note: Fieldwork placements are structured learning components of an accredited higher education program and are not employment arrangements.
