Living and Studying in Australia
Australia has the third largest number of international students in the English-speaking world and is often a student's first choice for international study.
The Australian Education System has a standardised system of qualifications with all institutions offering nationally recognised qualifications being registered with the Australian Government. Known as Registered Training Organisations, the institutions must meet very strict regulatory conditions including high ethical standards and quality of training offered. Together with the great lifestyle opportunities available in Australia there is little wonder that over 200,000 international students choose to study in Australia.
Living in Perth, Western Australia
Western Australia’s capital city of Perth is considered among the most beautiful cities in Australia. Its natural parklands and beach lifestyle attract tens of thousands of visitors each year. The Swan River runs through Perth and provides great opportunities for yachting or parasailing. With cycleways and footpaths alongside the river (and along the entire Perth Coast) a healthy lifestyle is easy to maintain. For further information click here.
Climate
Perth enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm dry summers averaging daily minimum 17°C and maximum 30°C; and mild winters averaging daily minimum 8°C and maximum 18°C. It is also the sunniest Australian city with an average of eight hours of sunshine a day. In every aspect Perth has the ideal climate for outdoor leisure activities such as golf, swimming and surfing, scuba diving and camping.
Transportation
Within Perth city there are free buses to the major tourist attractions such as the museums, galleries and department stores. When you eat out in Perth, it’s likely that the produce was grown locally and when combined with local wines and alfresco dining – well, it’s an experience all on its own.

Accommodation and Airport pickup
Accommodation is an important aspect of student life in Perth especially for international students, many of whom are studying away from home for the first time. Stanley College aspires to ensure that the students are comfortably and safely accommodated in order that they can concentrate on their studies. All students are encouraged to have accommodation organised prior to arrival in Australia. The Student Support Officer can refer students to appropriate accommodation services. If this service is required students must contact Stanley College through their agents or by email info.agent@stanleycollege.com.au 2 weeks before their arrival.
Students requiring airport pickup services must contact Stanley College through their agents or by email info@stanleycollege.com.au 2 weeks before their arrival.
School Aged Dependant
If you would like to bring your children to Australia with you, you must be aware of the following schooling issues: It is an immigration policy that school-age dependants of international students MUST undertake formal schooling either at government public school or at private school while they are in Australia. Fees may be incurred and will vary from school to school. You will need to provisionally enrol your child in a school before you leave your home country and you will normally have to pay the school fees one semester in advance. The school will issue an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment Form (eCoE) stating the program and its duration, so that you can obtain the appropriate visa for your child.
Please refer Stanley College Pre-Departure International Student Handbook for futher information. To find more information about local private or public schools around Perth, please visit www.privateschoolsdirectory.com.au or www.det.wa.edu.au/schoolsonline/home.do
Temporary Accommodation on Arrival
If requested by the student, temporary accommodation will be arranged by Stanley College. On arrival the student will be placed in hotel style accommodation at $80 to $120 AUD per night. If this service is required students must contact Stanley College through their agents or by email info@stanleycollege.com.au 2 weeks before their arrival.
Homestay
Stanley College has teamed with the Australian Homestay Network (AHN) to give international students the opportunity to be hosted by a specially trained homestay host for a safe and happy introduction to living and studying in Australia.
Homestay is a cultural exchange between a local individual or family (called a host) and a visiting international student and is a wonderful way to share a unique cultural experience. Homestay hosts will help international students to settle into their new lives in Perth and provide them with useful tips and information.
International students can book a homestay placement for 2-4 weeks as part of their orientation to Australia process.
AHN hosts provide a clean and furnished bedroom for their guest. This includes items like a bed, desk, wardrobe, chair and a study lamp. The visiting student will have access to bathroom and laundry facilities as well as meal services (for the initial stay) and students can choose a range of AHN options if they wish to extend their original homestay placement.
It’s Interesting and Fun
Enjoy everyday activities with your AHN homestay host including:
- Tours of your local community
- Help with the basics of Australian culture
- Taking part in everyday conversation
- Learning basics such as buying transport tickets, where the local shops are, how to access banking, internet, mobile phone and personal safety tips
- Help with English and 'Aussie' words and phrases
- Ongoing support and backup from the Australian Homestay Network (AHN)

Rental & Shared Accommodation

These arrangements can be sharing a house or flat or renting a full unit, town house or housing with friends and suit students who are in Australia for a period of time and are comfortable with this type of living arrangements. The approximate cost of shared accommodation is $80 to $150 AUD per week. Alternatively renting a full unit, town house or house can be $300 to $800 per week.
Before renting a house, town house or unit, the International student should read "A Tenant's guide" from the Department of Commerce, Western Australia and become familiar with their rights and responsibilities.
